I know you might still be traumatized from a certain Turtle starring game from 1989, but let me tell you our boys are back and they’re bringing all the arcade fun to the Nintendo Switch 2 with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Arcade: Wrath of the Mutants.

I was huge fan of beat’em ups and a definite arcade junkie when I was younger. Turtles in Time is by far one of the GOATs in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle gaming world and not nearly as PTSD-inducing as the NES game. When I heard they were releasing a new Turtle-powered arcade style game for the Switch 2 I was hyped. 

Arcade beat ’em ups live or die on fast momentum and four-player local co-op. Wrath of the Mutants: Ninja Edition doubles down on giving fans the most polished version of Raw Thrills’ 2017 arcade brawler. While, original home ports suffered from hardware limitations, the Switch 2 upgrade fixes those completely with a locked 60fps in 4K docked mode and practically zero load times, making it feel like sitting right in front of the actual cabinet.

Nostalgia

For anyone who grew up on the 2012 Nickelodeon Turtles show, this is a massive nostalgia trip. Bringing back the original TV voice cast—plus finally adding Splinter and Casey Jones as playable characters—makes this feel like a legitimate event for TMNT fans. Culturally, this is a big win for preserving arcade games in the modern era.  

The core objective was bringing the Raw Thrills arcade game to Switch 2 with major visual upgrades like 4K resolution, 60fps, dynamic shadows, and HDR, alongside extra playable characters. The execution lands well; the game runs silky smooth compared to older versions, even if the combat remains basic arcade button-mashing at its core.

Story Setup & Pacing

Shredder and the Foot Clan are causing chaos across NYC, Dimension X, and Coney Island. The Turtles, Splinter, and Casey battle through 6 stages and 13 boss fights to stop him. The super-fast pacing (15–20 minutes per level) is perfect for short handheld sessions or casual couch co-op play.

Themes, Performances & Character Design

* Themes: Classic TMNT staples teamwork, pizza, martial arts, and brotherly bonds.

* Vocal Performances: Awesome delivery from the actual 2012 TV cast Seth Green (Leo), Sean Astin (Raph), Rob Paulsen (Donnie), and Greg Cipes (Mikey) who bring authentic energy to the combat banter.

* Character Movesets: New characters feel distinct. Splinter plays fluidly with staff-based defense, while Casey acts as a heavy hitter armed with hockey sticks.

* Dialogue: Fun, Saturday-morning cartoon fare packed with classics like “Booyakasha!” and “Cowabunga!”

Performance on Switch 2 is great: crisp 4K docked mode, 1080p handheld, locked 60fps, clean anti-aliasing, dynamic shadows, and sharp reflections. Audio features fast arcade synth-rock tracks, punchy hit effects, clear voice mixing, and zero input lag.

Verdict

Ultimately, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Arcade: Wrath of the Mutants is a nostalgic, blast especially in four-player local co-op. Using mutant power ups to clear the Foot off my screen never gets old. While it is fun to play solo, games like this are always better when you have a friend or two to play with. After all, what’s a brawler without some smack talk on the side? Priced at $29.99, this game is must for not only TMNT fans but also anyone who loves a good arcade session.
