Review: Disney Pixar Inside Out is Here! | #InsideOut

June 18, 2015 By Ashley 22 Comments

Don't let Anger blow his top, Disney/Pixar's Inside Out is finally here! This has been a long time coming for our family. At Disney Social Media Moms Celebration we were treated to a special preview of Inside Out. Since then the kids have been waiting, sometimes not so patiently, for it to arrive in theaters.

After hearing Jonas Rivera describe the 5 year process of how this came to life and saying “UP was a love letter to our grandparents, Inside Out is a love letter to our children” I knew I would need some tissues. Seriously Disney, all the feels!

The Kids were full of JOY that we were headed to screen the movie in 3D. They brought along their trusted emotions – Joy and Anger.

First up is the new Disney Pixar short “Lava.” I dare you to watch this and not go around saying I Lava You. The graphics are ridiculously amazing. Those whales look real and if you took away the volcano face you would think you were watching a Disney Nature film.

What if we could personify emotions?

Inside Out is the most unique movie I have seen in awhile. The visuals are colorful, impressive, making the viewer see what their imagination could look like on the big screen. I felt a special connection to this movie, not only as a Disney fan but because as a creative I “got it” when Jonas explained the process of bringing our emotions to life.

Okay I need to nerd out for a minute. The design points for the emotions, their most basic form are really genius. We get to see a glimpse of this when Joy and Sadness are wandering the depths of the mind.

This isn't a movie about the brain. It is about the mind, your memories, personality, and emotions. We meet Joy, Sadness, Anger, Disgust, and Fear. Joy is Riley's lead emotion, she has been with her the longest. Sadness was a tough one, they did not want her to be too negative/depressing. Anger is very passionate about fairness. Keep an eye out for his daily papers. Disgust's job is to prevent you from being poisoned both physically and socially. Fear is there to stop you from taking unnecessary risks.

From start to finish Inside Out takes you on a journey to discover what makes you well you and finally explains why on Earth those annoying songs get stuck in your head!

Riley is a happy girl, mostly joyful but when her family moves to San Francisco things begin to get a little hairy, like that guy we saw who looked like a bear. Joy and Sadness being very opposite have a hard time working together. Eventually that comes to a head and oops something happens to the core memories. Why are you touching them Sadness?

Just like that, Joy and Sadness get whisked away to the Personality Islands and Long Term Memory. There we meet an only imaginary friend who cries candy and find out what happened to all those old phone numbers we don't need to remember anymore.

Left behind to help Riley manage this big move, new school, and a not so fun house are Disgust, Anger, and Fear. Just imagine what your day to day would be like if these 3 were at the control booth for your mind.

It is hard for me to pick out a favorite part of this movie. If you twisted my arm, I would have to say the entire Dream Productions scene is hilarious and explains why our dreams are like B-list movies. Inside Out is perfect for the whole family. The kids loved the movie. We laughed, teared up, and laughed some more. Spoiler: Don't worry as much as Anger wants to say that curse word they learned he doesn't.

In the end, we all learn that our emotions aren't so simple. Sometimes to feel Joy you need Sadness and vice versa.

We are all beautifully complex humans with some really awesome emotions at the helm. This weekend, meet the little voices inside your head!

Go see INSIDE OUT in theaters today!

I think it sounds so deep. I’m all about talking to my kids about feelings. They were invited to a birthday party to see it tomorrow morning. My friend rented out a whole theater. I hope they go! I have to work but my husband might take them.
