One of the things I’ve always loved about the LEGO Star Wars universe, especially the older specials, is the way it *lovingly* mocks the galaxy far, far away. Whether it’s the jokes about Palpatine and his chair, R2-D2 being a menace, or Luke’s height, LEGO never disappoints. The latest canon to get the block treatment is The Mandalorian. This breezy little visit to Mando’s world recaps all three seasons of the live-action series along with The Book of Boba Fett. It’s interesting to see which characters get forgotten about and which moments are glossed over (season 3 is all but absent). There are a few new moments included, revolving around the idea that Din’s friends are throwing him a party, but other than that it’s focus is to retell the adventures of Mando and Grogu with that LEGO-fueled humor.
It’s always fun to see the big moments of any franchise retold through the over exaggerated lens of the LEGO world. Din (Gavin Hammon) and Grogu’s (David Acord) adventures are still full of wow but also goofy to boot with loads of visual gags. However, it is the self-aware jokes that always stick out to me. Early on there is a bit about “This is the way” that made me laugh. Yes that phrase sounds cool but if we really are honest with ourselves, like a lot of catchphrases, it’s either kinda cheesy at times or too serious for its own good. And again, nothing wrong with that!
Much of the live-action cast has returned to voice their LEGO selves. Pedro Pascal might be absent but Amy Sedaris (Peli Motto), Bill Burr (Miggs Mayfield), Katee Sackhoff (Bo-Katan Kryze), Rosario Dawson (Ahsoka Tano), Giancarlo Esposito (Moff Gideon), and the original bounty hunter himself, Temuera Morrison (Boba Fett) all come out to play. Morrison’s role is one of the highlights of the returning cast and it’s easy to hear that he is having a blast with this version of the character he knows so well. This Boba Fett carries out his business with an inflated sense of self which is hilarious and also makes you wonder if the spin-off show would have been better received if it had let him run with this idea as well.
For longtime fans of not only Star Wars but pop culture, there are loads of easter eggs and callbacks to keep eagle-eyed viewers busy. There is an homage to the Simpsons, Baby Yoda, and more. The jabs and jokes fly by at the same quick pace of the entire special. You might miss a few laughing at one, so a rewatch might be the way to go. I have spoken. Yes, our buddy Kuiil is alive and well in the flashback.
Verdict
LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian delivers exactly what we’ve come to expect from these specials. It’s a silly, slightly snarky, and fun dive into the world of Mando and Grogu fueled by bulky characters and LEGO humor. For fans of all ages or even slight newcomers who really only care about LEGOs, it’s an entertaining recap and way to reignite your excitement for this corner of the galaxy. The jokes, visuals, heart, and voice performances are all great and although Pascal is missed, Hammon does well stepping into the Beskar. It also really goes to show that for someone who was the loneliest man to ever lone, Din has built a nice little found family.
